Question What does 9/11 mean to you?

I know I am a little late on the subject, but have been meaning to write this for awhile and figured I better post it now while I have a free moment.

Back when Bin Laden was killed, an Inland Empire radio host asked me- "What does 9/11 mean to you?" I gave him the same answer I've told several other people numerous times that dont have much of an idea how the fire service works.

I told him something to the effect of- The New York City Fire Department lost atleast 343 Firefighters that day. (I say "atleast" because other Firefighters died shortly after from complications) Three hundred and forty three is a big number, I mean to this day I still can not even fully comprehend losing that amount of personnel from one incident. It almost doesnt make sense to me, it should not happen. Its more people than in some small towns or cities.

To this day, I admit, I still can not fully grasp the number- 343. Three hundred and forty three, really? It is HUGE and I just....just cant find the words to understand or describe it happening all in one day. Yes, I know we lost more people that day adding in the civilians and thats a discussion for another time.

We have to remember the other agencies that lost people as well- NYPD, Harbor Police, Transit Police and the others. Sorry, I do know the exact agency names and numbers off the top of my head.

Its been said- Never Forget. And I hope we wont. 343? Heck just 3 is a lot. I will never fully accept or comprehend actually losing so many lives that one day. So thats my answer, sorry it's so long. Its the same unanswered question stuck in my head every time 9/11 comes up. I will never fully comprehend losing the 343 that day.

343 in comparison.

A strike team is five engines.

At 3 person staffing this equals 114 fire engines

114 fire engines nearly equals to 22 strike teams

At 4 person staffing this nearly equals to 85 fire engines

85 fire engines equals to 17 strike teams

145 Engine strike teams were assigned to the Station Fire.

Los Angeles County FD has 172 stations with 239 engines.

The are 106 six fire stations in the City of Los Angeles with 149 engines.

Long Beach Fire has 23 fire stations (airport and boat stations included) with 19 fire engines. Daily staffing is 133.

A fully staffed Type I hand has 20 crewmembers.

340 people equals 17 handcrews

A Greyhound MCI D4505 bus holds 50 passengers.

343 passengers would require 7 buses.

The USC Marching Band is over 300 strong.

An Arleigh Burke class destroyer has a crew of about 275 people.

As a former military man it sure shocked me into reality. We aren't immune. We aren't prepared. We aren't even interested in who is coming into our nation or what their most secret intentions are for our nation. Now we are being cautious but I am concerned now about the yielding of our Constitutionally guaranteed rights. I'm truly concerned about what the Patriot Act keeps asking for and we keep saying "OK!" Be prepared. Be vigilant too!

Must be how our parents felt when Pearl Harbor was attacked

Very Good Point Paddie. Imagine parents, like mine, who have been alive for both Pearl Harbor and 9/11.

Both were sneaky attacks on us

In little known fact, an unintentional breakdown in political communications between Japan and it's ambassadors led to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. It was this same type of unfortunate communications breakdown that led to a defeat of the Japanese Imperial Navy (IJN) at Midway.

The hijackings of 9-1-1 were somewhat predicted by agents of the US but stovepiping (look that term up boys and girls) and a anti-harrassment order of another US agency handcuffed those agents from taking action before hand.

If you are thinking that the attack on Pearl Harbor involved a US conspiracy, do a bit of research on the Gulf Of Tonkin Incident, the taking of the USS Pueblo and the attack on the USS Liberty during the Middle East Six Day War. Go deep. Go real deep. I'm talking hours of research deep.

The bottom line here is that enemy or foe, no nation has a lock on screwing up.
